WORLD OF FAT.jpgNEW PARADIGM
Right now there seems to be a global consciousness toward healthy eating and living; unmatched by any other time in modern history. The food science industry and the research the industry reveals has a significant impact on how countries, companies and organisations chose to invest. This in turn, will impact how we buy, what we buy. It’s common for a new piece of popular research to significantly impact our buying and consuming behaviour. Just think Tim Noakes and Banting and you get the idea. Continue reading

BLAQUE | TELL ME A STORY

Storytelling is universal; and ancient. Every society and culture from the beginning of
time has a tradition of storytelling.

tell-me-a-storyAlthough Africa is rich with stories and the tradition of storytelling, there isn’t much of a culture of documenting these stories in written form, or otherwise. Stories tell us about our roots, they offer concepts and give direction. They instil moral values, teach us lessons, preserve culture and allow us to remember history. They make us think and feel. They inspire action and spark ideas. Storytelling isn’t art, all art is storytelling. From the lyrics of a rap song to the fine movements of a ballet dancer or the brush strokes on a painting – all of art sets out to say something. To tell a story. Continue reading

JOURNALISM | TALE OF A 26 | IVOR’S TIME IN CAPE TOWN’S PRISONS

A tall, confident and well-mannered man with bright eyes and unique attire walked into the restaurant. You’d pick him out of a crowd, but only for his suave confidence. Ivor will turn thirty-two in August but has the youthful spirit of a teenage boy. Perhaps because most of his youth was spent in jail.

Ivor grew up in Grabouw in the Western Cape; a small, quiet town in the heart of the Elgin Valley, known for growing apples and not much else.He enjoyed going to school and getting up to mischief with his teenage peers and had a typical upbringing for the area in which he lived; except for one difference: From the age of sixteen to twenty-one, critical years for social development in any youngster, Ivor was in prison. BLAQUE | WHO’S RIGHT?

The Montebello Design Centre in Newlands, Cape Town showcases an array of artists and designers; from painters to filmmakers and landscapers. One artist in particular captured our imagination. His name is Right Mukore and he makes magic with wood.

“There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.” – Gandhi

FIRST STEPS
As parents we know that our little ones walk, talk and potty train at different stages – when they are ready to it. We also know that there aren’t fully grown adults babbling in baby-talk and still crawling around; so we can be confident that at some stage our bubbas will adapt and learn to function as most people do. Why then do we expect our children to suddenly become ready for formal education at the around the same age? Continue reading

JOURNALISM | SA HUMOURS US FOR AID MONEY BY PAYING LIP SERVICE TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING

human-traffickingSouth Africa has an incredibly poor reputation for managing human trafficking and in the past lacked strong legislation to stop it.
